Agentic AI: What It Means and How It Differs From GenAI

Short answer

Agentic AI is AI that acts on its own to reach a goal. Instead of producing one answer to one prompt, an agentic system plans a series of steps, uses tools and apps, checks the results and adjusts. Generative AI creates content; agentic AI uses that ability to get work done with less human input.

What does agentic AI mean?

Agentic AI means AI with agency: the ability to choose actions and carry them out toward a goal. The word describes how much the system does by itself, not a specific product.

A system is more agentic the more it plans, decides and acts without a person approving each step. A tool that drafts an email is not very agentic. A system that reads your inbox, replies to routine messages, books meetings and flags the rest is.

Individual products built this way are called AI agents. Agentic AI is the broader approach.

What is the difference between agentic AI and generative AI?

Generative AI produces content when you ask; agentic AI pursues a goal and takes actions. Generative AI is usually one of the parts inside an agentic system.

  • Input: generative AI takes a prompt. Agentic AI takes a goal or a trigger, such as a new lead in your CRM.
  • Output: generative AI returns text, images or code. Agentic AI returns a finished task: a booked call, a sent invoice, a merged pull request.
  • Steps: generative AI does one step. Agentic AI chains many steps and decides the order.
  • Tools: generative AI usually works alone. Agentic AI connects to email, browsers, databases and business apps.
  • Oversight: generative AI output is reviewed before use. Agentic AI needs guardrails because it acts before you see the result.

What are examples of agentic AI?

Agentic AI is already in common business tools. In support, Intercom Fin and Salesforce Agentforce resolve customer requests end to end. In software, Claude Code, Cursor, Devin and the GitHub Copilot coding agent take a ticket and open a pull request.

In sales, AI SDRs like 11x and Artisan research prospects and send outreach. In research, ChatGPT deep research and Gemini Deep Research browse dozens of sources and write a report. See more in AI agent examples.

How does agentic AI work?

Agentic AI works by putting a language model in a loop with tools. The model reads the goal, picks an action, calls a tool, reads the result and repeats until the task is done.

Two standards made this easier. The Model Context Protocol (MCP), introduced by Anthropic, gives agents a common way to connect to apps and data. Agent-to-agent protocols such as Google's A2A let agents from different vendors pass work to each other.

Larger setups use several agents with separate roles, such as one that plans, one that researches and one that writes. These are called multi-agent systems.

How widely is agentic AI used in business?

Most companies are still experimenting. In McKinsey's State of AI 2025 survey, 62% of respondents said their organizations were at least experimenting with AI agents, and 23% said they were scaling an agentic system somewhere in the business.

Analysts also warn about hype. Gartner predicted in June 2025 that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, and estimated that only about 130 of the thousands of vendors claiming agentic AI offer real agentic capabilities. Gartner calls the relabeling of ordinary chatbots "agent washing".

What are the risks of agentic AI?

The main risk of agentic AI is that it acts on mistakes. A wrong answer from a chatbot is a bad sentence; a wrong action from an agent can be a refund sent twice or an email to the wrong customer.

  • Prompt injection: hidden instructions in a web page or email can redirect the agent.
  • Over-broad access: an agent with admin rights can do admin-level damage.
  • Runaway costs: loops and retries burn usage-based credits.
  • Accountability: someone on your team must own each agent and review what it does.

How should a business start with agentic AI?

Start with one narrow, high-volume job where mistakes are cheap and results are easy to count. Answering the phone, first-line support and meeting notes are common first picks.

Buy before you build. A ready-made agent such as an AI receptionist or a customer service agent is live in days. Build only when no product fits your process. Our buyer's checklist covers what to test before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT agentic AI?

+

Standard ChatGPT chat is generative AI. ChatGPT agent mode and deep research are agentic: they plan steps, browse, use tools and return a finished result.

Is agentic AI the same as AGI?

+

No. AGI means AI that matches people across nearly all tasks. Agentic AI only means AI that takes actions toward a goal, usually in a narrow area like support or coding.

What is an agentic workflow?

+

An agentic workflow is a process where an AI model decides some of the steps, instead of following a fixed script. For example, it reads an invoice, decides which account it belongs to, and books it.

Which companies make agentic AI?

+

Model makers OpenAI, Anthropic and Google build general agents. Business software vendors such as Salesforce (Agentforce), Microsoft (Copilot Studio), ServiceNow, Intercom and Zendesk add agents to their platforms. Startups like Sierra, Decagon and 11x build agents for one job.

Is agentic AI just hype?

+

Partly. Many products are relabeled chatbots, and many pilots fail. But agents that do one clear job, like resolving support tickets or writing code, are in daily use at many companies.
