What Is an AI Agent? A Plain-English Definition

Short answer

An AI agent is software that takes a goal, decides the steps needed to reach it, and carries them out using tools like email, a browser, a calendar or a CRM. Unlike a chatbot that only replies, an agent acts: it books the meeting, answers the call or fixes the bug, then checks its own work.

What is an AI agent, in simple terms?

An AI agent is a program that does a task for you, not just talks about it. You give it a goal such as "answer every missed call and book appointments", and it works out the steps and does them.

Most agents today run on a large language model (LLM) such as GPT, Claude or Gemini. The model is the brain. The agent is the brain plus access to tools, memory and rules about what it may do.

A simple test: if the software can only produce text for you to copy, it is an assistant. If it can log in somewhere, take an action and report back, it is an agent.

How do AI agents work?

AI agents work in a loop: read the goal, plan a step, use a tool, look at the result, and decide what to do next. The loop repeats until the job is done or the agent hits a limit you set.

  • Goal: a task in plain language, or a trigger like a new support ticket.
  • Model: the LLM that reasons about what to do next.
  • Tools: APIs and apps the agent can use, such as Gmail, Stripe, Shopify, a phone line or a web browser.
  • Memory: notes about past steps, the customer or your business, so it does not start from zero.
  • Guardrails: rules on what needs your approval, spending limits and when to hand off to a human.

What are some examples of AI agents?

Real AI agents are already doing everyday business work. Intercom Fin answers and resolves support tickets. Smith.ai and Goodcall answer phone calls and book appointments. Claude Code, Cursor and OpenAI Codex write and fix code across a whole repository.

Others work in the browser or on your desktop. ChatGPT agent and Perplexity Comet can fill in forms and compare prices on websites. Claude Cowork works with files on your computer. For a longer list grouped by team, see AI agent examples.

How is an AI agent different from a chatbot?

A chatbot answers questions; an AI agent completes tasks. A chatbot on a website might explain your refund policy. An agent can look up the order, issue the refund in Stripe and email the customer a confirmation.

The line has blurred because many chatbots now have agent features. Our full comparison is in AI agent vs chatbot.

What can AI agents not do yet?

AI agents still make mistakes on long, unfamiliar tasks, and they can act on wrong information with full confidence. They are best at narrow, repeatable jobs with clear rules.

Gartner predicted in June 2025 that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, citing rising costs, unclear business value and weak risk controls. The projects that last tend to start small: one job, clear success measures, and a human checking the output at first.

  • They need clean access to your tools. An agent cannot fix a process that only lives in someone's head.
  • They can be tricked by malicious text in emails or web pages (prompt injection).
  • Costs can climb if an agent loops or retries without a limit.

Do I need to code to use an AI agent?

No. Most business agents are ready-made products you sign up for and connect to your accounts, the same way you would set up any SaaS tool.

If you want something custom, no-code AI agent builders like n8n, Zapier Agents and Lindy let you assemble one from blocks. Developers can use agent frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI or the OpenAI Agents SDK. See how to build an AI agent.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT an AI agent?

+

Plain ChatGPT is a chat assistant. ChatGPT agent mode is an AI agent: it can browse websites, click buttons, fill forms and run code to finish a task you describe.

What is the difference between an AI agent and AI automation?

+

Classic automation (like a Zapier zap) follows fixed if-this-then-that steps. An AI agent decides the steps itself, so it can handle messy inputs such as a customer email written in any style.

Are AI agents safe to use for business?

+

They are safe when you limit what they can touch. Give each agent only the accounts it needs, require approval for payments or deletions, and review its logs in the first weeks.

What is the most common AI agent for small businesses?

+

Customer-facing agents are the most common starting point: AI receptionists that answer the phone and support agents that answer website chat and email. They are easy to measure and save time from day one.

Will AI agents replace jobs?

+

Today they mostly replace tasks, not whole roles. They take over repetitive work like answering routine questions, data entry and first-draft writing, while people handle exceptions, judgment calls and relationships.
